The Lift, Aquilon, The Whiskey, Smart Bar, etc.
Lots of memories about this place. It changed hands more than the Browns have changed quarterbacks. It always had a Euro-beat feel to it, no matter who owned it. My favorite incarnation was the Lift; but to be honest it's hard to seperate the memories. It was the only club with bleachers as far as I can remember (bleachers and drunk kids?).
As far as I was concerned it was a stop on the dance circuit, especially on Sunday when the Nine was closed...
Now that side of the Flats is a ghost town. I haven't been by the site recently, and there's a resurgence of interest in the area. Who knows...
Greg Higley Adds:
Great site and great memories. My only bone of contention is about The Lift. I worked there on and off from 1991 to 1997, and I can tell you that although it changed names, it never once changed owners. It was always owned by Angela Verduyn and her husband, from beginning to end. Angela was always thinking up new names to drum up business and change with the times. In fact, the club was never called The Lift. At that time, it was called Aquilon. The Lift was Aquilon's Sunday night, but was so popular that many people referred to the place as The Lift no matter what the night. Each night had its own name. For instance, I think Friday night (or maybe Saturday) was called Love, and I'm pretty sure Rob Sherwood & Mike Filly were spinning, but it's a bit hazy.
